Placing Great Labs in Great Homes around the Great Lakes

Welcome!

Welcome to Great Lakes! Great Lakes Lab Rescue (GLLR) is a 501(c)3 charitable organization dedicated to placing unwanted Labrador Retrievers into loving new homes, providing good homes for Labs who might otherwise be abandoned or euthanized by their previous owners, and reducing the unwanted dog population and increasing responsible pet ownership of all dogs through education. We are an entirely volunteer run organization and nearly every dollar we raise goes directly to dog related care and expenses.

About The Breed

The Labrador Retriever is considered a large, stocky dog, standing between 22-25 inches and weighing between 60-80 lbs. Labs, as they are affectionately called, have a block head, drop ears, webbed feet, short coat, and a strong "otter tail." Their fur is dense and designed to repel water. They come in three colors, black, chocolate and yellow. Blond, fox red, vanilla, golden are all just variations of the yellow color. The Labrador Retriever actually originated in Newfoundland, not Labrador, where it was used to bring in fish from the rough waters of the North Atlantic. When not braving the high seas, these hardy dogs could be found hauling logs, retrieving waterfowl and scavenging for dinner, a remarkable versatility that remains a hallmark of the breed today. Labs have long been prized for their abilities as devoted

How You Can Help!

If you are a pet lover, you know that medical expenses can add up. It often costs us well over our adoption fees to provide proper medical care and treatment for many of the dogs we rescue. As a result, we are always grateful for any donations. To make a monetary donation please click the link on this page to be directed to Paypal's secure site. Please note the text box if you are donating in memory or in honor of a Lab or person. We can send acknowledgements we simply need the information

An opportunity for you that combines your financial contribution with an in-kind donation is for you to purchase gift card for us for Doctors Foster and Smith. We have been recognized as an official Paws for a Cause partner and as such any gift card you purchase will go directly to us and the purchase of much needed preventatives and medications. Please click the link on this page to be directed to their web site.

You can also help by doing something you do every day! Search the web using GoodSearch and we get credit for it! Go to www.goodsearch.com to find out how you can sign up! GoodSearch: You Search...We Give!

Your time is equally valuable to us. We can only save as many dogs as we have foster homes for. If you would consider making your home available to a lab in need of rescue, it would be of great benefit to the Lab you are saving. We constantly have to turn away surrendered labs simply because we don't have a foster to house them temporarily. Click on the foster home icon on this page for an application to be a foster home!

To make an in-kind donation, please click here to email us and let us know what you have so we can arrange to receive the items we need. We are always in need of new or gently used collars, leashes, dog beds and toys. We can also use non-expired medical supplies (heartworm preventative, flea & tick preventative, syringes, pet bandages, etc.)

If you don't feel comfortable welcoming an additional Lab into your home at the moment, there are many other ways to help. You can assist with marketing & public relations, check shelters in your area for labs, identify or transport a lab from its current location to its new foster home, plan a fundraiser, write an article, make a pre-adoption home visit, or assisting in "manning" a booth or table at a local event. We're open to any ideas that you may have. Please click here to help or with any great ideas.
